Just putting the thought down, but given the silliness of not being able to take the EC as a Warlord and not being able to use the Allied detachment CO as the Warlord put another thought in my head. Why not take IG as primary and Black Templar as secondary? Of course, the first thing that pops up is that I end up taking an extra BT HQ anyway (EC is free slot) to open up the Terminator Command Squad. OTOH, it seems to avoid the problems I've been having with transportation. The concept is to use the combination of IG HW Squads, Typhoon Speeders and a pair of THDC Terminator squads to open and escort the way for IG Troops in Chimeras to score objectives. Given the new Squadron and Cover rules, having one, two or three Speeders isn't real important now, whereas in 5th a pair of Speeders was critical for maintaining full fire and cover in the most efficient manner.

Well, it is going to be 6th Edition at NOVA this year, although given the way MVB wrote the first "discussion" post, it was fairly obvious that there would be no discussion. So, now we are left with what to do, especially with incompetent GW FAQ writing.
Allies have become a non-issue IMO from both the mass "only in Codex: X" smeared all over the FAQs and the inability to share rides among "brothers in arms". One question to be answered, if you are allied at brothers, you can attach characters to either ally's squads, but does the presence of an allied IC prevent the squad from getting into a transport or not? I've worked out some basics, especially my minimum core BT list and most of a variation on my Necron list. The sad part, I'm more excited about my Necrons than my Black Templars. Maybe too much investment in wanting to use my Deep Strike list... At least for Black Templars. Right now I'm going to be doing all my brainstorming on new BT lists over at Marshal Laeroth's. He has a wider reader base and it is easier than bouncing around the various blogs. Currently we have several lists up and linked. Nike has a gunline list linked, Marshal Laeroth has a couple of allied lists (vanilla Marines and Dark Angels) and I've got both a straight Terminator heavy BT list and an allied IG list, which is really an outline.
So, I'm off to a nearby town to play in a little 400 point skirmish tournament using Adepticon rules. Yes, this is about 5th Edition, but the theory will fit into 6th, and IMO be a testbed for the new Allies rules. Especially if, as I fully expect, NOVA 2012 ends up jumping to 6th at what is really the last minute for a 6thish-NOVA-FUBAR Edition tournament. Anyway, back to the list design. Only requirement is one Troop and then you can use up to one of any slot, including another Troop.
Hmmm. Okay, I have plenty of BT, but the rules say nothing greater than AV12 unless a DT, so there go my dreams of a LRC with a squad inside. How about my Necrons? At 400 points?! You must be joking, especially since not only do you need 90 points just to field the Royal Court models that make the army work, but a Necron Overlord is illegal because he has three wounds... Wait, what about my Witchhunter inducted Guard platoon? That actually might work... After reading Marshal Laeroth's BT Biker Army post, I found myself with some time on my hands while camping with my son for Cub Scouts, especially after the Kindle went kaput the first evening. So, with some downtime I set myself to explain why Marshal Laeroth's list wasn't the best choice to fulfill his objectives and ended up trying to define what is a better all-around BT list. Yes, yes, like with all army lists we should be able to just toss out X points using the FoC and beat up on any other X points, but....reality intrudes. In the end, I'm actually looking at the basis of a mech list that I'm actually fairly comfortable with.
Warning, this is a bit long. Next thing on my agenda is Coastal Assault. Four rounds, 1850 points, using the INAT FAQ.
I realized that I haven't played my 1850 point list for over six months and I know I've learned a few things since then, so I thought I might as well take a look at it and tweak a few things so I can get a few practice games in. Especially not in my usual laid back "learning mode" manner. Well, I went in to test some of the Necron "tricks" using the models that I had on hand. I need to work on my skillz with Necrons and coordinating some of their goodies to work better together, but after a 2k game vs Blood Angels and a 5550ish (3x players: Blood Angels, Eldar, Necron vs. 2x 'Nid players) and both of them wins, I'm wondering about my "stupid-good" simple list. Most of the "good" comes from people not being used to a seventy-six model shooty army that can walk up into your face and blast you at short ranges.
The basic "Win" list is fairly simple:
Imotekh (Night Fight mainly, but lightning strikes for random fun) 3x Scarabx10 3x Spyderx3 That's 1125 points there. Fill the rest with Warriors and some Ghost Arks. The Scarabs run around 19-24" (after getting +3 Scarab bases each from the Spyders) assaulting every vehicle in sight while the Spyders try to keep up. If need be, wait a turn to exploit the guaranteed 1st turn Night Fight to set up for the first charge. Remember it isn't necessary to have them rip open every vehicle, so multiassault and get multiple vehicles down to 4ish AV. Next turn, scuttle away to find new targets (or meet the Spyders for more Scarab bases) and let the Warriors shoot their now auto-pen shots into the armor shredded vehicles. The Scarabs can also tarpit most infantry quite well even if they aren't the greatest at killing them, but used carefully, the Spyders can help on the beatdown. In fact, that is the weakest part of the core of this list, the AI is low, especially if you have to worry about leaving squads at objectives. Booooring, but it should be workable. Okay, fiddling around with three lists to see what happens with the metrics. The lists are probably not the greatest, they have the sole advantage of being what I could field right now with what is in my house, including doing some conversion (20 NW on sprue into 20 NI using the extra weapons in the Immortal;/Deathmark boxes). I don't like some of what I see, but then I'm not claiming to be fielding a competition list.
Ground Rules:
This post is a bit weak, but I'm going to stick it up anyway since the main reason it is "weak" comes from me being unhappy with getting a decently balanced list so far. I dislike that every last one I've figured out depends on Imotekh the Stormlord himself to give it that extra little edge. Oh well, back to the grind. In the last post, I went over the metrics of the five lists (Marshal Laeroth's Gunline (Nova 2012 v2.0), New DDP (v2.3) and Old DDP and my New and Old Deep Strike). That is not the entire tale as the metric merely shows the potential of a list to deal damage. Other factors involved include: Mobility, Flexibility and "Style".
