Helbrecht & Grimaldus Reviews

From Frontline Gaming.    Helbrecht.     Grimaldus.

While the guys at Frontline are somewhat clueless on what Black Templar were (i.e. - they think Black Tide is "the" Templar build from fluff), I pretty much agree with them.  Both have nifty stuff, but for what are supposed to be combat characters they are underwhelming and not worth the points.  Frankly, I could make a better case for the old codex versions being included in lists than the new ones.  Both suffer from GW passive aggressive nerfing...."Look, we made it better, stronger than it was", while not quite giving it the upgrade contemporary units got....you know, the ones with new models GW would like to sell for a higher price.  I think we've panned the EC enough over on Implausible Nature and he's right in line...over priced and under powered.

Welcome to the Really Deep Dark Blue Templars....

Hey I agree that it is some nerfing as I don't think the special characters are that great especially compared to the possible kill-ness of the Chapter Master but they have their uses. For one I have been experimenting with grimaldus with honor guard. I know it feels weird as u bring the CM too but Grimaldus isn't warlord material but that hatred and invul save bubble with the honor guard actually isn't too bad considering their strength and his will not die.

I agree, but that is the trick, you have to find a use for them. When GW is nerfing like this, they actually "improve" the unit in some ways, but the "improvement" relative to the rest of the codex doesn't compete.

Quick example from C:Necrons
Monolith: Lost the ability to fire all its weapons,
Lost the ability to avoid DS mishaps unless it goes off table (in fact, the ability to DS in the middle of enemy formations to break them up),
Can only DS if held in reserve,
Lost the ability to jink (sure, heavy skimmers shouldn't be able to "jink", but with that much power output holding the sucker up, make it an invul 5+),
Lost antimelta protection,
Lost the ability to do reserve & battlefield maneuvers.
In the same slot with the vastly more efficient Annihilation Barge

Oh, but it's 35 points less and has a chance of avoiding shaken/stun results

Another is the line: "BT are better! Look you superstuds, you get to buy LRCs for your not-so-special special Troop choice. Just ignore the fact that they are full price and more expensive than the arguably stronger LRR."

Like I've said before, I wonder if the person who wrote the Jan 2011 BT FAQ had a job after that.
