BT/IG vs GK/Nada 1850

This is going to be a quick and dirty because I was more interested in a "learning" game than a more serious one, so I didn't even bother with notes.  Especially since January was my last game.

My list
EC-ATW
THDC Terminators
Las/Plas Crusader
Stormtalon (AssCan/SWML)

Co Cmd (4xSniper)
2x Inf Platoons of 1xPlt Cmd (AC, 2xFlamer, Chimera), 2x Inf (AC, Flamer, Chimera), HWS (AC)
1x SWS (2xMelta, Flamer) attached to one platoon to ride in Vendetta
2x Ratling Squads (3x Snipers)
Vendetta w/ Heavy Bolters.
Armored Sentinel w/ Plasma Cannon (hey, I got the model with some other stuff and it covered that last 75 points...)

Opponent, Coteaz in TDA
6 GKT squads (everything combat squads, so maybe only 3x) with a bit of bling.
Vindicare Sniper
StormRaven (empty)

Normal setup (long side) & Emperor's Will.  No night fighting, Warlord traits were never relevant.

NOVA 2012 GT Overview

First things first, Mike and his staff did a great job from what I saw.  His people were kind, courteous, dedicated and worked to fix issues in a timely manner.  They didn't always succeed and I'll list some of those issues in another post as well as where they dealt with the unexpected quickly.  The NOVA team should cover most of that in their post event hot wash.

Here, I mainly want to discuss my actual experience playing in the GT.  I went 1-5 with a close fight in the win, four losses by a sliver and once getting slaughtered.  IMO, TOs for tournaments need to make some changes, because like Mike's idea that "well everyone can just play their 5th lists mainly" when he made the switch to 6th, I think there is a lot of wishful thinking going on.  This is an overview, so I'm not going to break down each battle here.  My list is here.

Early 6th Impressions after some table time

Well, my Testbed list performed in many ways sort of like I expected.  Including at my LGS where I played a leisurely game with an older gentleman about my age who was learning and we were double checking all the rules and discussing tactics as we went.  Of course, to the derisive comments of the younger "boys" who were of the opinion that since they knew how to stick it in, pump fast, finish quickly and roll off to the next engagement they had a clue how to play.  Needless to say, I was hearing severa rules mistakes being made by all participants, although in many cases it appeared to be in the interests of speeding up the game process.  OTOH, with the obvious attitude of not sticking to the "wham, bam, thank you ma'am" ethic = stupid, I quit bothering to correct their "issues".  Anyway, back to 40K.

Building a Different List

So, I'm off to a nearby town to play in a little 400 point skirmish tournament using Adepticon rules.  Yes, this is about 5th Edition, but the theory will fit into 6th, and IMO be a testbed for the new Allies rules.  Especially if, as I fully expect, NOVA 2012 ends up jumping to 6th at what is really the last minute for a 6thish-NOVA-FUBAR Edition tournament.  Anyway, back to the list design.  Only requirement is one Troop and then you can use up to one of any slot, including another Troop.

Hmmm.  Okay, I have plenty of BT, but the rules say nothing greater than AV12 unless a DT, so there go my dreams of a LRC with a squad inside.  How about my Necrons?  At 400 points?!  You must be joking, especially since not only do you need 90 points just to field the Royal Court models that make the army work, but a Necron Overlord is illegal because he has three wounds...  Wait, what about my Witchhunter inducted Guard platoon?  That actually might work...

Necrons vs. Tau 1500

This was more of a learning game, not sure if the guy was getting back into 40k after a long absence or just learning.  He was running a Tau list with (I think, not familiar with Tau):
2x Hammerhead(?) Tanks with railguns + some of the S5 AP5 guns
1x Tank with seeker missiles, marker lights & some smaller guns
2x Transports with 9x Fire Warriors (BS3, S5, AP5 RF guns) each
1x Transport with 5x Pathfinders (Sgt, heavy weapon of some kind, 3x troops, markerlights)
2x Squads of battle suits, one with the leader, with a variety of gear, lots of flamers, RF weapons, heavier stuff.

My list was trimmed to:
1x Overlord w/ Warscythe in Command Barge (Gauss) (CB)
1x Overlord Phaeron (with the Gauss Immortals for Relentless)
1x Immortals (Gauss) w/ Cryptek of Destruction (Solar Pulse)
1x Immortals (Tesla) w/ Cryptek of Destruction (Solar Pulse)
15x Warriors with Lord w/ Rez Orb
10x Warriors in a Ghost Ark (GA)
9x Scarabs
2x Spyders

First Necron report

Well, I went in to test some of the Necron "tricks" using the models that I had on hand.  I need to work on my skillz with Necrons and coordinating some of their goodies to work better together, but after a 2k game vs Blood Angels and a 5550ish (3x players: Blood Angels, Eldar, Necron vs. 2x 'Nid players) and both of them wins, I'm wondering about my "stupid-good" simple list.  Most of the "good" comes from people not being used to a seventy-six model shooty army that can walk up into your face and blast you at short ranges.

'Ard Boyz & the Newbie Learning Curve

Well, not the best performance for the Black Templars, but the only thing I can say for sure is that at least I don't keep repeating the same mistakes.  I've read more than one GT winner say that it takes about a year for a newb to quit stumbling and become competitive and they may just be right.  Well, I do have a few more months to go before the year hits.

2k vs 'Nids

Ugh, this is actually two reports one of them from a couple of weeks ago.

The first one was more of a lesson learner for me in a couple of ways.  Both lists included the Doom of Mylanta (or something) that sucks the life out of troops.  It might have been Wailing or Shrieking, but it is one of those xeno things.  Unfortunately my notes are a bit sketchy for the first one, but I remember the main flow.

Two MCs were deployed on the board, one a Hive Tyrant I think (walking melee thing) and the other was a shooter who regenerated.  I started out with my two Terminator squads, Assault Terminators and all three double Typhoon Speeder squadrons on the table.  My five squads were in their pods with the EC.  The 'Nid player was a reserve army with Spores and outflanking with two squads of Genestealers (8-9) with Brood Lords and a large squad of melee 'Gaunts.  He won the roll and went second.  I plinked some shots at one of the MCs, causing some wounds on the first turn.  Second turn I had a couple of pods drop and put them in the center to start supporting my center/left setup.  'Nid second turn took advantage of my bad deployment as he rolled everything out of reserve on turn two.
