This is killing me. I spent seven months looking forward to taking my now illegal and broken in any case Deep Strike list to NOVA 2012. I've got a few games under my belt and everything with how I play Black Templar is off a bit. OTOH, the only change to my Necron list is a losing a few extra Cryptek, Scarabs and a Spyder to fit in a pair of Night Scythes. This is the same basic list that I've been undefeated with for the last several months in solo play. I've been beaten twice in team play, but in both cases I crippled both of my opponents singlehandedly while my partner was focusing more on not being tabled. Looking over the models to be built/finished, painting to be done and other features, plus my limited time to do that and practice with a list, I'm stuck.

Rumor this, rumor that, there have been so many rumors around and around that between people claiming to have a "mainline" into GW being cagey, to people who can fake GW well enough to make things up, it is all contradictory. Rumors of making vehicles weaker, rumors of making vehicles tougher, rumors about new movement rules, shooting rules and assault rules. With all that, I'll make a prediction you can take to the bank...
GW is totally ignoring the 8000lb gorilla in the room. After all, this isn't a mere "rules update" or "adjustment", this is supposed to be a whole new edition! If serious changes need to be made, now is the time to make them! Yes, this has been beat up on all over the place. I don't like the stuff. I just put together one and it was simultaneously too hard, too soft, too brittle and too flexible. It is pretty, but after having to take my finest razor and go into all the deep corners to trim out both annoying flimsy flash and cut out thick stuff, then finding out that the crap does NOT fit together correctly is beyond annoying, it is stupid. I spent forever trying to trim stuff off one part that kept flexing like a rubber band, then forever working on a part that almost seemed to want to break into pieces (and did in spots), then there was the parts that looked like it was two crammed together bits, which IMO points to an inability of the manufacturer to bother with making sure the mold is fitting together correctly.
Wonderful models, joyous models, detailed models. Ummm, did we have to have three different persnickety options of weapons? In the case of the Immortals' Gauss Blaster, four different side panel/power cable options?
<sigh> Oh well, mainly a rant when I started realizing all of the Warriors I'm in the process of converting into Immortals (which will give me 5x Gauss Immortals, 5x Tesla Immortals & 5x Deathmarks (unconverted) per Immortals/Deathmarks box) will have to be custom fitted for each and every weapon depending on the pose. HINT: Put Warrior torso together, assemble weapon + arms to the torso, then glue the torso to the legs (however you modify them. Minor rant when a buddy I haven't heard from for months called up and killed two prime hours of model building time when the wife was going to help do some of the cutting of conversion bits (plasticard, etc.) and cleaning up mold lines. Okay, slow robots, so lots of I2. Seriously guys! This is the power armor thing again. You do know that despite all the fluff text wasted on the technological marvel of Power Armor, on the table top it is all just......a way to give someone a 3+ AS. It doesn't have any other effect in the entire game. However, onto the Necrons:
Tesla with BS4 works out to: Two chances to miss, Three chances to hit and One chance to Tesla for three hits. Heh, mathematically a Tesla weapon never misses. I will be ignoring funky effects like the biggest Tesla weapon's ability to hit everything withing 6" and the fancy staff of Imotekh.. Well, for a while the Whiskey & 40K blog appeared to be having troubles as I was trying post a comment to this post. I thought I had gotten it up finally and when I checked back again, my comment wasn't there. Darn problems with Blogger. No matter, I tried again and reposted. This time I made sure the comment was up yesterday before I went to bed, but then it was gone again when I checked it this evening. Hmmm. The little "test" comment I did stayed up. Well, I'll put my comment up here anyway since it seems to have trouble staying posted on blogger.
Now I realize Mike was a bit hot about this subject and his terrain placement has excited a lot of commentary online. Good grief. Seriously. Mike ran what appears to be one of the best GTs many in the community have ever seen and the two biggest "issues" that have any credibility are the location and the terrain. In each case the "issues" are more about annoyance than actual "I'm never coming back to this crappy tournament". Mike, people loved NOVA! I got a collection of B. Kliban books a few decades back and while they are all funny, this is one of two that have stuck in my memory even after the books are long gone. The other was "Intellectual" with a typical pipe smoking professor type naked on his hands and knees with a tube stuck up his arse leading to his brain.
Minor rant here after reading several posts where everyone is trying to justify the GW line that building GW models, painted with GW paints, setting up GW terrain to play a GW game is all one big hobby. |
